Know how to recognize warning signs of mistreatment of children.

In most cases, children who are victims of mistreatment show a number of clear signs. It is not your responsibility to determine whether a child actually is a victim of mistreatment. Your duty is simply to report it if you suspect or know that a child is being mistreated.

Neglect

Is pale, apathetic and looks neglected.
Is frequently absent.
Wears dirty clothes or is not dressed appropriately for the weather.
Engages in delinquent behaviour, such as alcohol or drug abuse.
Often has no lunch.
Has poor hygiene.
Has untreated physical or medical problems.
Is developmentally delayed but is not receiving services.
Lacks supervision.

Psychological violence

Suffers from severe depression.
Is isolated, anxious or aggressive.
Is blindly obedient or submissive.
Desperately seeks attention.
Is extremely awkward when playing with other children.
Wets its bed without any medical reason.
Frequently complains of headaches, nausea, stomach pains.
Lies.
Shows developmental delays.

Physical violence

Cannot remember how it got hurt.
Is afraid of adults.
Startles or cowers on contact.
As a baby, has a blank stare.
Is highly aggressive.
Indiscriminately seeks affection from everyone.
Is extremely obedient, seeking to please.
Shows injuries inconsistent with the explanations given.
Has several injuries at different stages of healing.
Has different injuries over an extended period of time.
Has injuries inconsistent with the age of the child.

Sexual abuse

Plays games that are inappropriate and sexually oriented.
Talks about or draws inappropriate and explicit sexual depictions.
Has precocious, bizarre and unusual knowledge of sexuality.
Engages in prostitution.
Plays games of seduction.
Is unusually or excessively itchy in its genital or anal areas.
Has torn, dirty or blood-stained underwear.
Is pregnant.
Has injuries in its genital and anal areas.
Has venereal diseases.
Is afraid of contact with others.
