Winter confinement can be a difficult time for families and can affect the mental health of children and youth.
Here are some tips to help you get through this season:
- Recognize things that are going well.
Every day, take a few minutes with your child to think about and discuss the things in your lives that you are thankful for. This exercise allows you to focus on the positive. It's not about forgetting the difficulties experienced during this time, but rather to focus on the good things you have.
- Enjoy the pleasures of winter.
Winter allows us to practice all kinds of activities and stay active. Find an outdoor activity that everyone in your family can enjoy! Walk in nature, snowshoe, build snowmen, build forts and more. Be creative in how you spend time with your children this season.
- Collaborate on common projects.
Make time to be interested in things that interest youth and teens. Suggest new activities or projects, both indoor and outdoor, that you can do together. It will take your mind off things and make for a good time.
- Keep in touch and encourage your child to do the same.
It's important to keep in touch with those close to you. Find practical and fun ways for you and your child to connect virtually. You can find virtual programs that interest you or free online workshops, for example.
- Adopt a healthy routine and habits.
Having a routine helps young people know what to expect in their day, which can be helpful in maintaining good mental health. As part of the routine, focus on healthy habits such as eating well, getting enough sleep and exercising on a regular basis.
- Do not hesitate to ask for help.
